Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He was born in New York City, participating in several whaling voyages in the face of financial difficulty. He used the knowledge he gained as a base for his forthcoming novels. Rising to fame due to the success of his early three novels written in the 1840's, his popularity soon fell into decline in the 1850's. He died long forgotten by the literary community. In the early 1920’s, what became known as the Melville Revival sparked renewed interest in his work, particularly Moby Dick and his unfinished Billy Bud, led by Raymond Weaver.
